How Does VASER Differ from Traditional Liposuction?
There are many approaches plastic surgeons can take when it comes to fat reduction surgery—known as liposuction. This is because prior to their removal, fat cells must be loosened or broken apart in order to make them easier to suction out. Everything from manual action to the introduction of cell-disrupting energy may be employed, with each strategy offering unique benefits. In this blog, Dr. Carlos Burnett takes a closer look at one option in particular available at his practice in Westfield, NJ: VASER.
While the name sounds like “laser,” VASER does not use light. Instead, the device emits ultrasound energy to loosen the fat cells.
How does VASER compare to traditional liposuction? Take a look!
Traditional fat reduction surgeries involve tissue being firmed up with an injection of wetting solution, after which the plastic surgeon makes an incision, inserts a wand-like tube known as a cannula, and begins physically breaking apart the unwanted fat cells.
Yes, traditional liposuction techniques are driven by old-fashioned muscle power. Vigorously—but carefully—moving the wand back and forth in the target area physically batters the fat cells, and the resulting loose material can be suctioned out via the cannula, which was the exact same tool used for the cell disruption. While this technique is both effective and safe, it does cause some trauma to the body and requires down time after for healing as bruises and swelling fade.
VASER does away with this manual aspect of the process, instead using ultrasound energy to break up the fat cells. A specialized firming solution is still injected, but the ultrasound-based approach involves a much gentler next step. The essentially liquified fat is suctioned out after, as per usual, but the resulting bruising and swelling are greatly reduced—as is the healing time necessary following the surgery.
After a VASER session, patients often find that they are up for returning to their daily activities in a matter of days—as opposed to longer stretches for recuperation after its surgical counterpart.
As for volume-reducing results, the results are pretty much the same. Patients enjoy slimmer and sleeker contours, as well as a boost in self-image and confidence.
