Exercise and diet can help to sculpt slimmer contours—but can only take your figure so far. Some stubborn pockets of fat never seem to shrink. Happily, for these areas, there is liposuction. NJ-based board certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Carlos Burnett works with the highest level of care and the most advanced techniques to help his surgical fat reduction patients achieve a sleeker, more proportional look.

When it comes to plastic surgery options, liposuction has been offered for decades. It involves the use of suction to remove fat from specific, isolated areas of the body—and is best performed by highly experienced and talented plastic surgeons, like Dr. Carlos Burnett.

What Can Liposuction Treat?

Liposuction can create smoother, more balanced body contours to improve your shape by targeting those unwanted fat deposits that you can’t seem to get rid of. Traditional liposuction allows Dr. Burnett to reduce volume in a range of areas where you may have stubborn, excess fat:

  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks
  • Love handles
  • Back
  • Thighs
  • Knees
  • Arms
  • Chest, for male breast reduction to address gynecomastia

Liposuction at NJ's Burnett Plastic Surgery is about more than simply removing unwanted fat cells. Dr. Carlos Burnett uses a strategy known as Lipo360 to carefully and selectively contour tissues in and around the treatment area for natural-looking results. This comprehensive approach highlights each patient's unique curves and musculature instead of applying a "one size fits all" standard.

The best candidates for liposuction include adults who are average or slightly above average weight, individuals who have firm skin with good elasticity and good muscle tone, those who are in good overall health without conditions that would make surgery more difficult, patients who have pockets or deposits of fat that aren’t responding well to weight loss techniques, and non- smokers. It is also important that candidates have realistic expectations about what they can achieve with the surgery.

Keep in mind that skin quality has a major impact on liposuction results. The skin molds itself to your new body shape after you have had this surgery and will look smooth if your skin’s elasticity is good. Good skin quality will mean minimal stretch marks and skin laxity. Skin that has lost elasticity with age may hang loosely after the fat below is suctioned out. This laxity can be addressed with excision surgery, known as a “lift” or “tuck” (such as an arm lift or tummy tuck).

Note that liposuction isn’t effective for dimpled skin caused by cellulite or other types of unevenness on the surface of the skin, and it won’t remove stretch marks.

Physical appearance is a factor in how good we feel about ourselves. When small pockets of fat develop on the arms, hips, tummy, or other areas, we may spend seemingly endless years trying to reduce them through diet and exercise or mask them with clothes bought to conceal the telltale bulges and bulk. Even when these steps do not work, there is hope with a cosmetic surgery approach. Liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in a certain area, though the amount of fat that can be removed depends on what the area looks like and the volume of the fat.

Liposuction is ideal for men and women who are:

  • committed to healthy living
  • at or near their ideal body weight
  • dissatisfied with small pockets of lingering fat
  • willing to stop smoking for at least four weeks prior to surgery and four weeks after surgery
  • desiring a minimally invasive procedure with little downtime
  • in good health

This surgery can often increase a patient’s self-confidence by helping to create the ideal silhouette, makes the treatment areas slimmer and allows clothing to fit better, and has a shorter operating time compared to many other similar body contouring procedures.

Traditional liposuction surgery is performed with local anesthesia and oral sedation.

If you decide this this surgery is the best option for you, it’s important to schedule an initial consultation. In preparation for this surgery, patients will discuss what they can realistically expect from the procedure with Dr. Burnett. He will review your medical history and talk to you about any medical conditions you might have. He will need to know about any medicines or supplements you’re currently taking. During your consultation, you will also discuss your skin type, the type of liposuction that is most suitable for you, costs, and any other questions or concerns you may have.

Patients will need to avoid taking certain medications such as blood thinners and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for at least one week prior to the surgery. You might also be asked to lose weight and avoid using tobacco products. You may need to schedule time off of work for recovery.

Liposuction has been a popular form of body sculpting for many years. As with many procedures in cosmetic surgery, the way a physician can help patients achieve their aesthetic goals with liposuction surgery has improved significantly since it was first developed. Patients of Dr. Carlos Burnett can undergo liposuction in our Westfield, NJ, office, where they can expect to avoid the side effects common to more dramatic surgical procedures. It typically takes a few weeks for swelling to go down and the best results are often seen a few months later. You will notice that the treatment area looks slimmer. As long as you maintain your weight, you can expect the results to last—even though skin tends to lost its elasticity as you age.

Patients are often curious about whether fat can return after this treatment. It’s important to recognize that the fat cells that have been removed are gone for good. However, it is possible for the remaining fat cells to grow or for bulk to return in other areas after the surgery if given the opportunity. This is because liposuction won’t prevent you from gaining new weight if you do not eat well, have a sedentary lifestyle, or both.

Results may be slightly diminished if you gain a small amount of weight, but the improvements to your body shape will still be visible. For optimal results, it’s best to maintain the weight you are at after the surgery.

Liposuction may be performed on its own or incorporated as an element of a tummy tuck or Mommy Makeover. Patients interested in altering their body contours for a silhouette that emphasizes the features they want emphasized may also consider breast augmentation or a breast lift In addition to traditional liposuction, we also offer VASER®—another type of minimally invasive surgical fat reduction procedure for body contouring, which involves the use of ultrasound energy to loosen stubborn fat cells before suctioning them away.

The Burnett Plastic Surgery team aims to make each patient’s experience comfortable and safe, yielding beautiful results.
