FAQs

Sculpting a slimmer and sleeker figure takes time and effort—and even a consistent diet and rigorous exercise may not shape your contours the way you hope. For anyone who wants to truly take control of their silhouette, there is liposuction. NJ-based board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Carlos Burnett takes great care with each of his patients and uses sophisticated, cutting-edge techniques to provide his patients with the proportional look they desire.

Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure that has been available for decades, and it has evolved considerably over the years to become safer, more effective, and more customizable for 2025. Considering how popular surgical fat reduction is, it is also important to remember that using suction to remove fat from isolated pockets around the body is a procedure that should only be performed by a highly experienced plastic surgeon with an artistic eye, such as Dr. Carlos Burnett.

WHAT MAKES AN IDEAL LIPOSUCTION CANDIDATE?

An ideal liposuction candidate is an adult whose weight is average or slightly above, who has firm skin with good elasticity and good muscle tone, who is in good overall health and lacks any conditions that would make surgery more challenging, who has pockets or deposits of fat that do not seem to be responding well to weight loss techniques, and who does not smoke.

Ideal candidates for liposuction should also have realistic expectations about what the surgery can and can't accomplish. Having an understanding of the scope of the potential results can improve patient satisfaction.

Keep in mind that a patient's overall skin quality has a very significant impact on liposuction results. One fat is removed, healthy and youthful skin can mold itself to the new body contours and will look smooth and taut. Good skin quality can also result in minimal stretch marks and post-surgical skin laxity. Skin that has lost its elasticity with time, however, may hang loosely after the fat beneath it has been suctioned out. This loose skin can be removed via excision surgery, known as a "lift" or "tuck" (such as an arm lift or tummy tuck). Specific strategies for dealing with skin laxity will depend on the degree of the laxity and where on the body the skin is.

In short, liposuction is ideal for patients who are:

  • committed to healthy living
  • at or near their ideal body weight
  • dissatisfied with small pockets of lingering fat
  • willing to stop smoking for at least four weeks prior to surgery and four weeks after surgery (although stopping forever is recommended)
  • seeking a minimally invasive procedure with little downtime
  • in good health

It is important to understand that liposuction will not be an appropriate treatment for cellulite or other types of dimpling or unevenness on the surface of the skin, because these irregularities are caused by more than just the presence of fat cells. Liposuction also will not remove stretch marks, as these are surface-level marks that develop as skin stretches to accommodate rapid growth.

How we look has an impact on how good we feel about ourselves. When visible pockets of fat develop on the arms, hips, belly, or other areas of the body, we may spend significant time trying to reduce them through lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, or to hide them with outfits and articles of clothing chosen to conceal obvious bulges and bulk.

Unfortunately, lifestyle changes can’t target specific fat pockets, so you have little to no control over where excess bulk will be reduced by dieting and exercising. The right outfit can hide excess fat, but does nothing to address the underlying concern.

Liposuction surgery literally reduces the number of fat cells in the target area. The amount of fat that can be removed depends on what the area looks like and the volume of the fat present, but the results are intended to create a noticeable difference where the patient wants it.

A liposuction procedure can often provide a boost to a patient’s self- confidence by helping to create an ideal silhouette, making the treatment area or areas slimmer, allowing outfits to fit better, and requiring a shorter operating time when compared to similar body contouring procedures.

Dr. Carlos Burnett uses liposuction as part of his fat-transfer procedures. The surgery allows him to remove fat from one area of the body, then safely move the harvested cells to another area where more volume is desired. This is a key element of Brazilian butt lift surgery.

More recently, Dr. Burnett has begun to use a technique known as "Expansion Vibration Lipofilling." This strategy allows him to transfer the fat cells more quickly and efficiently when he is enhancing a patient's buttocks, thighs, or hips.

For traditional liposuction surgery, Dr. Carlos Burnett performs the procedure for patients who have local anesthesia and oral sedation and patient-controlled anesthesia ("ProNox") to reduce sensation in the target area.

If you decide this this procedure is the best option for you—or are even merely considering surgical fat reduction— it is important to take the first step of scheduling an initial consultation. To prepare for liposuction, patients will talk with Dr. Carlos Burnett about what results they can realistically expect from the surgery. Dr. Burnett will review your medical history and discuss any medical conditions you might have with you. You will also need to tell him about any medicines or supplements you're currently taking.

During your consultation, you can see before-and-after photos of liposuction patients in order to better understand the results Dr. Burnett can provide, as well as get a sense of what your results could look like on you. In addition, you will discuss your skin type, the type of liposuction that is most suitable for you, liposuction costs, and any other questions or concerns you may have. Dr. Burnett's goal is to get to know you, as well as for you to feel comfortable and confident in your ultimate body-contouring decision.

When it comes to getting ready for the procedure itself, patients will need to avoid taking certain medications—such as blood thinners and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs—for at least one week prior to the liposuction surgery. Some patients may be asked to lose weight or to avoid using tobacco products in order to make the procedure as safe as possible and to maximize results.

Remember that you will need to make time for recovery, so planning ahead for this reality is an important step as well.

Liposuction has been a popular form of body sculpting for patients from all walks of life for a long time. As with many cosmetic surgery procedures, the way a physician can help patients achieve their aesthetic goals with liposuction surgery has improved significantly since it was first developed—and that includes what happens after the procedure.

When patients choose to work with Dr. Carlos Burnett for liposuction in our Westfield, NJ, office, they can expect to avoid side effects associated with more dramatic surgical procedures, thanks to his modern techniques and best practices.

Expect swelling to go down and bruising to resolve a few weeks after the liposuction procedure. Since it takes some time for side effects to resolve, expect the best results to develop a few months after the actual surgery. This is when patients will truly notice that the treatment area appears slimmer.

In terms of the longevity of the liposuction results, you can expect the contours to last for as long as you maintain a stable weight. Keep in mind that gaining new weight can alter the effects of the procedure.

With that in mind, patients often wonder whether fat can "come back" after liposuction surgery. The good news for anyone thinking about this question is that fat cells that have been removed via fat-reduction surgery are gone for good. However, it is possible for the fat cells that remain behind to grow larger if given the opportunity. It is also possible for the volume of fat to increase in other areas of the body if a patient gains weight after the surgery. This is because liposuction will not prevent you from gaining new weight if you do not eat well, if you maintain have a sedentary lifestyle, or both.

Patients' results may be slightly diminished if they gain a small amount of weight, but the improvements to their body shape thanks to the fat-reduction surgery will still be visible. In order to enjoy the most optimal results, it's best to keep your weight at the number you see just after your surgery.

Something else to note is that skin tends to lose its elasticity with time, leading to increased laxity. There are both surgical and non-surgical options for addressing this laxity in order to allow your leaner contours to continue to be visible.

Liposuction may be performed as a standalone surgical procedure, or it may be incorporated into a larger set of changes, such being included as an element of a tummy tuck or Mommy Makeover.

Patients interested in altering their body contours for a silhouette that showcases the features they want emphasized may also consider breast augmentation or a breast lift. In addition to traditional liposuction, we also offer VASER® (not laser lipo)—another type of minimally invasive surgical fat reduction procedure for body contouring, which involves the use of ultrasound energy to loosen stubborn fat cells before suctioning them away.
