WHAT CAUSES CELLULITE?

Cellulite is a normal, common, and harmless condition that more than 90 percent of women and some men experience. It’s associated with dimpled, bumpy, or uneven skin that is sometimes described as having an “orange peel” or cottage cheese texture.

Although just about anyone can get cellulite, it is much more prevalent in women. Many people attempt specific ways to improve the look of cellulite, such as weight loss, exercise, massage, and creams. Unfortunately, these treatments are often unsuccessful. In other cases, it can take a long time for the results to appear, or the outcome may not be long-lasting.

Cellulite often develops on the thighs and buttocks, but it sometimes appears on the breasts or upper arms.

One of the most common misconceptions about cellulite is that it’s caused by excess fat or sagging skin. The reality is that even thin people can have cellulite. Sometimes skin laxity is mistaken for cellulite, but the two issues aren’t the same.

Cellulite is associated with collagen fibers—also known as septae or long, tough, fibrous cords that connect fat to the skin—that become stretched, break down, or tighten in a way that causes the underlying fat cells to bulge out. There are connective cords that keep the skin tethered to the muscle beneath it, and there’s a layer of fat between them. Fat cells can begin to accumulate while the tightened cords are pulling down, causing the appearance of an uneven surface. Avéli offers a way to target the tightened bands and release the tension, so you no longer have to feel self-conscious about showing off these areas of skin.

WHAT IS AVÉLI?

Rather than simply attempting to treat cellulite from the outside, Avéli treats this condition from the inside out by directly targeting the underlying causes of the dimpling on the thighs and buttocks. It is the first and only treatment of its kind for cellulite, allowing practitioners to identify and release the septa.

Avéli consists of a long, thin instrument that has a light and retractable blade. Treatment sessions involve tiny 3mm incisions and small needle holes. Any scars that are left are barely visible. It is designed to be a one-time cellulite treatment with a single in-office visit. Another advantage of the Avéli procedure is that there is little to no downtime, with most patients resuming their normal activities within 24 to 48 hours.

WHAT IS THE AVÉLI PROCEDURE LIKE?

The procedure often begins with the specific dimples you are targeting being circled or marked off. You will next go into the treatment room and lie on your stomach. A local anesthetic is injected into the buttocks and the backs of the thighs to numb these areas.

The Avéli device is guided under the skin and directly targets the dimples, pulling at and then severing bands that are causing the small depressions. The blade forms a hook shape and cuts into the fibrous bands, retracting in a slicing motion. When the specific septa bands that are causing the dimples are identified, the Avéli device releases those specific bands.

We are able to confirm when Avéli releases the septa bands in real time. After all the bands have been cut in a specific area, we move on to another spot. A treatment session lasts about an hour on average. Any discomfort is usually mild, with some patients reporting a tugging or zapping sensation. We can verify that the treatment has been effective by pulling the device through the same area again after we have finished releasing each band. Eventually, patients notice visible smoother skin and the results are long-lasting.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR AVÉLI?

Avéli is designed for cellulite dimples caused by the way septa bands interact with the surrounding fat, rather than uneven texture due to rolling or wavy areas of fat.

Avéli treatments are ideal for women who are at a healthy weight and have tight skin. There is no official age cut-off for Avéli treatments, but it tends to work best on those with good skin elasticity . If you have been searching for an in-office procedure that provides lasting cellulite reduction results in just one session, Avéli could be ideal. Sometimes this treatment may not be as effective for those who have a large number of cellulite dimples that are grouped closely together. Also note that this treatment is not designed for fixing other conditions, such as pockets of excess fat or wavy skin related to skin laxity.

HOW DOES AVÉLI COMPARE TO OTHER CELLULITE TREATMENTS?

One of the advantages of Avéli is that it offers a higher level of precision and verification compared to other similar treatments for cellulite. Since it treats cellulite dimples directly, Avéli will not cause as much damage to the surrounding tissues and the side effects are minimal. Another difference is that Avéli is a one-time treatment. Topical creams and lotions only work on the surface and cannot address the underlying source of the issue.

WHAT ARE RECOVERY AND RESULTS LIKE AFTER AN AVÉLI SESSION?

Avéli provides results after a single treatment. You should notice a visible difference within one month. Many people see a significant improvement in their cellulite within around three months after this treatment. Patients may experience mild or light side effects such as bruising, discoloration, and swelling, or in some cases minimal scarring around the incision sites. Mild to shallow dimples may disappear entirely, while deeper dimples may be greatly reduced in depth and appearance, even if they aren’t entirely removed.

Patients may experience tenderness for a few days after an Avéli cellulite reduction session. Going for walks can help you improve blood circulation and speed up the healing process. The incisions typically heal within a few days. Sometimes we may recommend wearing a compression garment to help manage swelling or bruising.

WHICH COSMETIC TREATMENTS ENHANCE THE LOOK AND FEEL OF YOUR SKIN ASIDE FROM AVÉLI?

Avéli is often combined with body contouring or skin tightening procedures to maximize results. Along with cellulite reduction, Burnett Plastic Surgery also offers a complete range of aesthetic treatments to improve your body shape or the look and feel of your skin. Non-surgical treatments can address other types of concerns, such as wrinkles, uneven or rough texture, dullness, and uneven pigmentation. Examples include BOTOX® to reduce dynamic wrinkles associated with repetitive facial movements, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to add volume or fullness and reduce static wrinkles or augment the cheeks or lips, chemical peels for enhancing the general skin tone and texture or addressing other types of cosmetic concerns, or Venus Versa IPL to address a number of skin imperfections.
