Is There a Way to Soften Frown Lines?

Frown lines—also known as glabellar lines, worry lines, or “elevens”—are vertical wrinkles that form between the eyebrows. People sometimes feel like these lines make them look angry or serious even when they don’t feel that way. Our faces change as we age, and wrinkles often develop in the areas where muscles frequently move, such as around the mouth, around the eyes, and on the forehead. Frown lines between the eyebrows form due to small muscle contractions—but even though they’re called “frown lines,” frowning isn’t their only cause. Smiling, squinting, and other facial movements can also cause them to become more pronounced. This is because the forehead muscles squeeze inward whenever we furrow our brows for any reason, and the muscles create visible traces of our movement patterns. Furthermore, as we get older, our skin loses elasticity and can no longer snap back into its original shape as easily. With all of this in mind, you may be wondering: “How do I stop the frown lines between my eyebrows?” Our NJ based team at Burnett Plastic Surgery knows that patients who are seeking our advice for how to reduce signs of aging will often ask us this question. Fortunately, we have an answer!

If you’re worried that frown lines will create the wrong impression of your personality and want to minimize these wrinkles, there are various options that can help. A frequent strategy we recommend involves botulinum toxin injections. These are minimally invasive treatments that temporarily relax specific facial muscles—such as those that cause frown lines—and restrict their movements. The existing lines will appear smoother once the BOTOX® starts working. Furthermore, you won’t be able to furrow your eyebrows as easily.

Keep in mind that the earlier you start botulinum toxin treatments, the more preventative their effects are. In other words, it’s better to prevent lines from forming than to treat the wrinkles after they’ve begun to deepen in the skin.

In addition to BOTOX®, you can also try wise lifestyle practices such as maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, getting an adequate amount of sleep to help your skin recharge, applying sunscreen every day, moisturizing your face, and exfoliating.
