Why Do We Get Crow’s Feet?

Crow’s feet are those small lines that branch out from the corners of your eyes, visible especially when you squint or make similar facial expressions. The fine lines are usually most noticeable when you’re smiling or laughing. These wrinkles aren’t all bad—in fact, some researchers believe that they make faces more attractive by adding genuine warmth to our smiles. However, even if they give you personality, there’s no doubt that the more wrinkles you have, the older you tend to look. The area around the eyes is one of the first to develop wrinkles because the skin is very thin and delicate there. We usually recommend BOTOX® for New Jersey-area patients who want to make lines in this area less noticeable. In light of the recent National BOTOX® Cosmetic Day in the United States, we’re focusing on all things related to this incredible wrinkle-reducing treatment, including its ability to make pesky crow’s feet disappear.

To understand how BOTOX® targets these wrinkles, you’ll need to be aware of how and why crow’s feet occur.

When you’re younger, your skin has a lot of collagen, elastin, and moisture, so it’s capable of returning to its original resting shape after it’s been pulled in different directions—similar to an elastic band. Your skin is thick and supple in your youth, so most teenagers and young adults don’t have to worry about wrinkles.

When a person’s skin inevitably starts to produce less collagen and become weaker as the inner layers thin, years of it being squeezed and creased together begin to take a toll. Dynamic wrinkles can start to form due to the facial muscles stretching the skin whenever you make normal facial expressions to show various emotions. These lines also come from using muscles to talk and chew. As the muscles around the eyes are used constantly—for blinking and squinting—these movements couple with collagen depletion to cause wrinkles to develop. This is especially a problem for anyone who has a very expressive face.

BOTOX® relaxes these active muscles so that the skin no longer moves and bunches up as much on the surface. The result is a smoother, more youthful look with the muscles—and skin—at rest.
