The Importance of Sun Protection: The Best Way to Stop Aging
How often are you out under the sun? Whether you’re sitting by a window or strolling outside on a cloudy day, our skin reacts to everything that it comes in contact with: the quality of air, the temperature, and the sun.
Every time we go outside, we expose ourselves to the sun rays. Unfortunately, this exposure subjects our skin to sunburn, wrinkles, dryness, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone and texture, and even skin cancer.
According to Dr. Shilesh Iyer, M.D. of the New York Dermatology Group, the sun emits harmful ultraviolet rays regardless of the weather.
“On overcast days, only visible rays from the sun are blocked,” he said, meaning clouds have nothing to do with it! “The best way to protect the skin is with sun protection.”
Want to Avoid Sun Damage? Use Sunscreen Every Day
t surely isn’t the first time you’re finding out that our skin needs protection from the sun. Just because your skin looks healthy today despite your daily walks outside, doesn’t mean that the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays aren’t damaging your skin.
Our skin typically starts showing signs of sun damage over time, so the best way to avoid it, later on, is to start now. Wearing sunscreen every day is the biggest game changer for your skin’s health.
Doctors suggest applying at least an ounce of sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before you go outside. Make sure that your sunscreen has at least SPF 30 and can protect you from both UVA and UVB radiation.
Don’t just settle with one application either. If you’re outside for more extended periods of time, reapply your sunscreen every two hours. When you go for a swim or a sunbathing session, be sure to apply sunscreen every hour.
