What You Need to Know About Recovering from a Brazilian Butt Lift

Brazilian butt lifts are incredibly popular and, in fact, it is estimated that there was a 28% increase in the performance of these surgeries between the years 2014 and 2015, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). On average, it is performed every half hour of every day. This procedure not only gives patients the voluptuous bottom they desire, but it also removes fat from other areas of the body to accomplish this goal, thereby contouring common trouble areas, such as the stomach, hips, and thighs.

If you are interested in this procedure, you likely want to learn more about it, including what the recovery period might be like. Read on to learn more about it:

Recovering from a Brazilian Butt Lift

It is crucial that you follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions for recovery to ensure the best possible results. Below is what you might be able to expect from the process:

Initial recovery: In the immediate aftermath of your Brazilian butt lift procedure, you can expect to experience bruising and swelling in the areas that were used to harvest fat cells. Additionally, you will experience some pain, which can easily be managed with medication. Remember to switch from narcotics to Tylenol before driving a motor vehicle, however. Of course, no two patients are alike and everyone will recover differently. That said, most are up and walking a day or two after the procedure. You might find excess tumescent fluid draining from the incision points and it might be tinged with blood, but this is completely normal and should stop within a few days after the surgery.

Compression garments: Your plastic surgeon will put you in a special compression garment that is designed to treat the areas where liposuction was performed. Generally, it is recommended for patients to wear the compression garment for at least eight weeks to ensure the areas where fat was harvested are able to heal properly. This helps minimize swelling, decreases discomfort, and helps the skin retract. Oftentimes, compression garments have the rear cut out to prevent it from killing the fat grafts before they are able to solidify.

Sitting: One of the most critical recovery tips for a Brazilian butt lift is to never sit directly on your buttocks for at least eight weeks following the procedure. It is also advised that patients either sleep on their stomach or sides rather than on their back. If you absolutely have to sit, you should use a donut pillow or an inflatable pillow. Place the pillow behind your legs to avoid putting any pressure on the fat graft. Why is this so crucial? If you sit directly on the buttocks, this can affect blood circulation in the area, destroying the fat that was transferred to that area. Keep in mind that 40% of the fat transferred might not survive, which is why it is imperative that you do everything to protect that area and ensure that whatever can survive is preserved.

Resuming your activities: Following your surgery, high impact activities should be avoided, particularly if they involve any kind of bouncing. After a month, it is okay to begin resuming light activities, including fast-paced walking. Most patients are able to return to their normal activities six to eight weeks after their surgery and, after the fat cells stabilized more, you can resume more vigorous activities.
