What is the Difference Between Saline and Silicone Gel Implants?

If you are considering breast implants, you are probably wondering what your options are and how to choose between them. Both saline and silicone implants are safe and effective though each provides a different look and feel and are associated with their own benefits and risks. So how do you know which of these options is right for you and your specific aesthetic goals?

Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants have a silicone shell that is filled with a sterile saltwater solution after it is inserted. Being able to fill the implant after insertion not only means a smaller incision is required, but it also gives your plastic surgeon the discretion to produce symmetrical results. However, saline implants tend not to look or feel as natural as silicone implants. They tend to feel hard and have a round appearance, unlike a natural breast. In the event that a saline implant ruptures, it will not pose a risk to your health and you will be able to notice it right away, so you can have the problem addressed as soon as possible. Additionally, saline implants cost less than silicone and are available for women ages 18 and older.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone implants, like saline implants, have a silicone shell, but are filled with silicone gel, a more viscous substance than saline that better resembles the look and feel of natural breasts. These implants weigh less than saline implants, which can potentially make them more comfortable for a patient. Unlike saline implants, silicone implants have a decreased chance of downward placement and are far less likely to look rippled over time. If you are a particularly slender woman who has very little breast tissue, silicone implants are often the better option.

Still not sure which implant is right for you? Schedule a consultation with a plastic surgeon to find out if saline or silicone will best suit your goals.
