Are Women Wanting Smaller Breast Implants?

Since 2006, breast augmentation has been the most popular surgical procedure among American women, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). A surprising trend, however, is that many women are choosing smaller implants, and forgoing the traditional in-your-face results many patients sought previously. Surgeons are reporting that more and more women are seeking natural and subtle results, and often are only choosing a half- to a full-cup size larger than they already are.

Even more surprisingly, some women are choosing to remove their larger breast implants in favor of smaller ones. Some surgeons are seeing a spike in the number of women who are seeking to undo or modify previous breast augmentation in favor of a smaller size. Between 2015 and 2016, breast implant removals jumped by 15%, according to the ASPS. More and more, patients are seeking to look well-balanced, chasing the fitness-inspired body shape trends. What’s in is lean curves, which are much more subtle than the curvaceous pinups of years past.

There are other reasons women are seeking smaller cup-sizes. Smaller implants are easier to recover from and are at less risk of damage or injury while the patient adjusts. And, as many women know, big busts are painful and difficult to manage. Heavy breasts can cause significant back pain issues and can prematurely age and sag. In addition to these issues, they also can pose a number of fashion problems.

Large, sturdy bras are expensive, and they commonly are lacking when it comes to appearance. As fashion trends towards bralettes and skin-baring outfits, a heavy-duty bra can be unsightly. For these reasons, smaller, perkier busts are coming into fashion. Additionally, making the decision to jump several cup sizes with implants can mean that a woman’s wardrobe could require an extensive overhaul to fit her new shape.

Breast augmentation can be an easy way to revitalize your figure and take off years, but there are countless options to decide upon. A board-certified plastic surgeon can help you find the solution that best fits your goals, needs, and lifestyle.
