At Burnett Plastic Surgery, we have performed hundreds of rhinoplasty procedures. We are proud to offer our patients top-notch surgical procedures that combine cutting-edge technology and a discerning eye for beauty.
As one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries, considering all aspects of the surgery before committing is paramount. Below our Westfield plastic surgeon has outlined some common questions patients have regarding the procedure to help you decide if rhinoplasty is the right choice for you.
How long does swelling last after surgery?
After the procedure is done, patients will leave with a cast over their nose. This cast will remain on the nose for a week after the procedure. Once the cast is removed, most patients have moderate swelling of the nose. By the second week, most patients report that the swelling has gone down, but it typically takes a full month for the swelling to go down enough for patients to get an idea of how their new nose will appear. At the three-month mark, the nose begins photographing well, and results can be reviewed; however, the swelling does not fully resolve itself until up to a year after surgery.
How much time should I take off work for Rhinoplasty?
How much time you take off work varies depending on you feel about the surgery. Patients who do not mind being seen with bruising or swelling on their face take a week off work. If you work in a job that requires you to perform more than light seated activity, you should take off up to two weeks of work. Patients who wish to keep the surgery a secret, should take between 14 and 21 days off work.
When can I exercise after rhinoplasty?
Patients can return to their regular exercise routine three weeks after the surgery.
What are the risks associated with the surgery?
When you elect to have any surgery, there are risks associated with the procedure. Generally, you could risk having an adverse reaction to the anesthesia, infection, or bleeding. Some of the risks associated with the rhinoplasty surgery include:
- Recurring nosebleeds
- Hole in the septum
- Numbness of the nose
- Difficulty breathing
- Pain and discoloration
When can I return to my normal makeup and skin care routine?
The desire to go back to your regular makeup and skin care routine after surgery is normal, especially if you are one of the many patients who experience bruising under the eyes. You can apply makeup the day after surgery if you wish but make sure you do not get the cast on your nose wet. Keep a centimeter distance between the makeup or skin creams and your cast. When it comes time to remove your makeup, avoid washing your face with water for the seven days after your surgery. We suggest a makeup removing cleansing cloth.
